Schedule Your ConsultationWhat is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy?
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is one of the most well-researched forms of psychotherapy, built on the idea that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are closely connected.
By identifying and examining unhelpful thinking patterns — and the behaviours that keep them going — CBT helps you build more balanced, realistic ways of thinking and more effective ways of responding to difficult situations.
CBT is typically structured and goal-focused, with practical strategies you can apply between sessions to see real change in how you feel and function day to day.
How CBT Works
Treatment typically moves through several overlapping phases, tailored to your pace and goals.
Assessment & Formulation
We map out your current difficulties and build a shared understanding of how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours interact to maintain them.
Thought & Behaviour Tracking
You learn to notice the automatic thoughts and patterns of avoidance that show up in triggering situations.
Cognitive Restructuring
We work together to test and challenge unhelpful thinking patterns, building more balanced and realistic alternatives.
Behavioural Change & Relapse Prevention
We put new strategies into practice in daily life and build a plan for maintaining progress after therapy ends.
Who CBT Can Help
CBT has one of the strongest evidence bases of any psychological therapy, and is effective across a wide range of difficulties.
Anxiety Disorders
Generalised anxiety, health anxiety, and excessive worry that interferes with daily life.
Depression
Low mood, loss of interest, and unhelpful thinking patterns that keep depression going.
Panic Attacks
Understanding and reducing the cycle of physical sensations and catastrophic thinking that drives panic.
Social Anxiety
Reducing fear of judgment and avoidance of social situations, work, or study.
OCD
Structured, evidence-based strategies for intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviours.
Sleep Difficulties
Addressing the thoughts and habits that contribute to ongoing insomnia and poor sleep.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many CBT sessions will I need?
CBT is generally a shorter-term, goal-focused therapy, with many clients seeing meaningful change over a number of sessions. Your exact treatment length depends on your goals and the difficulties you're working with, and we'll review progress together along the way.
Is CBT just "positive thinking"?
No. CBT isn't about forcing positive thoughts — it's about identifying thinking patterns that aren't serving you well and testing them against evidence, so your thinking becomes more balanced and realistic, not simply "positive."
Is CBT available via telehealth?
Yes. CBT is well suited to secure video sessions, including worksheets and between-session strategies. See our telehealth page for details.
Do I need a GP referral?
No, you can book directly. A Mental Health Care Plan from your GP can provide a Medicare rebate and reduce your out-of-pocket costs, but it isn't required to start.
